It can be difficult to do event photography. Preparation and previous experience in photography are strongly recommended. You must be aware of your surroundings in order to take good photos without disturbing guests. Here are seven tips to help you prepare.

Execute your next Event Photography

  • Preparation

Preparation logistics are key to improving your event photography. They will help you save time and identify potential errors. Use this opportunity to get to know your surroundings.

  • Dress appropriately

Photographers should be wearing neutral colours. Bright colours can be distracting and dangerous as they could cast light from the subject’s clothing onto the subject. Most photographers prefer black or gray.

Make sure you have the Right Gear Event Photography

Event photography doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment. A full-frame DSLR with a zoom and a full frame external flash, a reflector or diffuser, and spare batteries are all you need to get event photography right.

A telephoto lens is necessary if the event is a public speaking event. A wide lens is essential if the venue is small and packed full of people. Are you lacking one? You can borrow one from a friend, or hire one for the day.

Pre-event photos: Get up early to take photos

You should arrive around 15-30 minutes early depending on the event’s style. This is where you build a relationship with your guests at the event. This will make them more comfortable asking for photos when the event begins. You can also take photos of the setup before the event.

  • Get active

After we have done all the preparation, it is time to learn what makes a great event photograph. People posing for photos are not as interesting as action shots of an event. It’s much more fun to share a picture of Mary throwing her bouquet into the air with all the ladies behind, getting ready for who will catch it first. This is the point. Be quick! You need to be alert and ready to capture a shot at any event photography. It’s impossible to predict what might happen. Always be alert!

When to use Flash?

Photographers love natural lightning. Understanding how to use artificial lighting in low-light environments and situations can be a great help.

  • Indoors: Churches, Weddings, Corporate Events

For event photography indoors it is highly recommended to use an external flash that can bounce off a white wall or ceiling for a natural look. When using external flashes, remember that TTL mode is your friend. For better results, adjust flash exposure compensation to get more.
